Body Shaping
Body contouring is among the most artistic of plastic surgery operations. Advances in both body contouring technology and technique have given patients a number of options both surgical and non-surgical to improve their silhouette. Many times these options can lead to confusion about which is the best option to address the issue at hand. During your consultation with our online consultants, we will listen to your concerns, educate you on the underlying cause and spend time discussing your options for addressing those concerns.
What exactly is Body Shaping?
Modern day body contouring commonly involves treatment of loose skin and reduction or redistribution of excess fat. Overall the goal is to create a more aesthetically pleasing body contour. Not every patient wants the same look and understandably so. This is why, at MIC, we take time to listen to each patient explain the changes they want made.
While many body contouring procedures involve removing excess skin, such as with an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) or extremity lifts (arm lifts/thigh lifts), not everyone is willing to have the required scar. Likewise, there are patients that desire fat to augment their buttocks and create a more curvaceous look while others simply want to remove fat from their love handles or muffin top removed. Consultation with one of our online consultants provides the foundation for achieving your surgical goals. Knowing your treatment options and the associated trade-offs of each are an important factor in determining the best treatment for you.
Body Shaping Procedures
If you are otherwise healthy but experiencing issues with body proportions, you may have been considering a procedure to correct them. There are a lot of choices when it comes to body procedures however, here are a few facts to help explain the differences between a few of these procedures.
- Liposuction has become one of the most common cosmetic procedures performed today and is an extremely popular procedure for both men and women. Liposuction is an excellent choice if you are wishing to improve body shape and definition. Its primary purpose is to improve the appearance of the body by removal of excess fat from localized areas. Each individual has these local accumulations differing on the basis of sex, race, age, and heredity. The amount of fat that can be removed is determined by the patient’s wishes and our recommendations, and limited only by medical safety. Our goal in liposuction is to produce a body contour that appears natural and is free of unsightly bulges. As with any procedure, there are limitations based on the patient’s skin texture, thickness, and ability to retract.
- After pregnancy, weight loss or simply as a part of the aging process, many people find themselves with excess skin and fat and loss of muscle tone around the tummy. Abdominoplasty or “tummy tuck” is an excellent choice for both men and women seeking a tighter, flatter abdomen and smoother body contour. The procedure involves an incision made within the “bikini” or “boxer” line under the abdomen, extending towards the hip bones. The placement of the incision helps hide the scar under clothes following the procedure. Excess skin and fat are removed, the muscle beneath is tightened, the skin is redraped to provide a pleasing body shape, and often the belly button is moved to a new position within the newly contoured abdomen. In some cases, a “mini-abdominoplasty” can be performed, which affords many of the same results with shorter scars. During your online consultation we will examine your body and discuss your options for the right type of abdominoplasty to yield the best results. It is important to note that a tummy tuck procedure is not a weight loss treatment.
- When it comes to breast enhancement, there are several options available, and it all depends on the complexity of the drooping and the loss of tissue, or perhaps it is the simple desire to replace lost fullness or firmness. Mild droopiness can be improved with breast implants, without a breast lift. If the nipple is not too low, and the breast tissue is not too soft, and the patient is willing to accept a slight increase in breast size, this option is a good choice. Another option available is Mastopexy, known commonly as a breast lift. This can be done without the use of breast implants. Breast lifts bring the nipples back up, usually along with the tightening of the skin under the breasts. Please keep in mind, that breast lift alone will not correct the loss of fullness in the breast, particularly the upper breast which occurs after pregnancy. Therefore many choose to do both breast implants and breast lift at the same time. This combination allows the recovery of fullness in the upper portion of the breast. Alternatively, the removal of droopy breast, added with breast augmentation can allow the breast to have a more desired shape without being enlarged.
- Many men develop excess skin and/or breast tissue on their chests. This condition is called gynecomastia and can be a cause for embarrassment and even discomfort. The exact cause of gynecomastia is still uncertain, but is likely related to an imbalance in hormones or the tissues linked to them. The condition can be treated with direct excisional surgery, liposuction, or a combination of these two procedures and can provide very pleasing results.
Any of these procedures can be performed individually or in combination with each other. We are happy to tailor a procedure that is right for you. With the advancement of anesthesia, monitoring, and medicines, longer procedures are now safer then ever before.

Body shaping involves a variety of medical and cosmetic procedures that are designed to improve the body’s contours. Treatments can be used to smooth troublesome areas or eliminate fat that’s resistant to diet and exercise, including fat found on your:
- Abdomen
- Buttocks
- Legs
- Arms
- Chest
- Back
Our surgeons can accomplish body shaping with both surgical and non-invasive treatments. Do take note that while our procedures do shape the body, they aren’t designed to replace a healthy diet or regular exercise.
If you’re an ideal candidate for body shaping, you should be near your ideal weight and maintained it consistently for some time. You eat healthily and exercise regularly, should be in good health, and not have any serious underlying conditions.
Body contouring helps men and women with stubborn fat reach their ideal shape. It’s not appropriate for those who are obese or have extreme weight fluctuations. If you plan on becoming pregnant, some of the body shaping procedures may not be recommended.

All body contouring procedures are performed under general anesthesia at an accredited surgical facility. The duration of the surgery and the time spent in the hospital will depend on what surgery was performed, as well as how many were combined. While recovery, from especially multiple procedures undertaken at the same time, can be somewhat discomfortable, the majority of patients feel that a new, tighter body is worth it. Patients will notice marked improvement with sagging features, as well as see a smoother skin appearance. Patients should adhere to a healthy lifestyle, and limit sun exposure so the surgical results are not compromised.
